Federal Skilled Trades Program

For qualified tradespeople with experience in eligible skilled trades. Lower language requirements than FSWP, but you need either a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province or territory.

Program Overview

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade. This program has different eligibility criteria than the Federal Skilled Worker Program, with lower language requirements but specific trade certification requirements.

Key Difference: FSTP requires either a valid job offer of at least one year OR a certificate of qualification in your skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

Eligibility Requirements

Skilled Work Experience

At least 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last 5 years.

Job Offer or Certification

Valid job offer for at least 1 year OR certificate of qualification from a Canadian province/territory. Candidates without a job offer may explore Provincial Nominee Programs for trade certification pathways.

Language Proficiency

CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing.
