PR Card Renewal

Permanent Resident Cards are typically valid for 5 years. You must renew your card before it expires if you plan to travel outside Canada. Maintaining your permanent resident status requires meeting residency obligations.

Residency Obligation

To maintain permanent resident status, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the last 5 years.

Days Counted Toward Residency:

  • • Days physically present in Canada
  • • Days outside Canada accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse
  • • Days outside Canada employed by a Canadian company
  • • Days outside Canada accompanying a permanent resident spouse employed by a Canadian company

When to Apply

Renewal

Apply when your current PR card expires within 9 months or has already expired.

Replacement

Apply if your card was lost, stolen, damaged, or if you need to update information (name, gender, etc.).

Urgent Processing

Request urgent processing if you need to travel urgently for work, family emergency, or serious illness.

Common Issues

Residency Not Met

If you have not met the 730-day residency requirement, you may lose permanent resident status. Once you have maintained residency for 3+ years, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Card Expired While Abroad

If your PR card expires while outside Canada, you must apply for a PRTD to return. Failure to maintain status may also trigger an inadmissibility determination.

Appeal Rights

If you receive a residency determination, you may have appeal rights to the IAD.
