Canadian Temporary Residence

Temporary residence covers authorized stays in Canada for work, study, or visit purposes, each governed by its own permit or visa category.

Canada offers multiple temporary residence pathways, from work and study permits to visitor visas and the Super Visa, and the correct pathway depends on the purpose, duration, and circumstances of the stay.

Work Permits

Work permits allow foreign nationals to work in Canada for a defined period, under either an open work permit (not tied to a single employer, such as PGWP, spousal, or IEC categories) or an employer-specific work permit (tied to one employer and often supported by an LMIA). The right category depends on the job offer, the worker's status, and whether an exemption from the labour market process applies.

Study Permits

A study permit authorizes a foreign national to pursue full-time studies at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. Applicants must demonstrate acceptance at a DLI, sufficient funds, and an intent to leave Canada at the end of authorized status, among other requirements. Study permits can also open pathways to post-graduation work authorization and, later, permanent residence.

Visitor Visa

A visitor visa (temporary resident visa) allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for tourism, family visits, or short-term stays without the intent to work or study. Some travellers are visa-exempt and instead require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Eligibility depends on ties to the home country, purpose of travel, and admissibility.

Business Visitor Visa

A business visitor visa allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for business-related activities, such as meetings, conferences, or contract negotiations, without entering the Canadian labour market. It does not permit direct engagement in the Canadian labour market or receipt of remuneration from a Canadian source. Business visitors are assessed under the same visitor framework, with activity type as the key distinction from standard visits.

Super Visa

The Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visa designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, allowing extended stays in Canada without the need for the periodic renewals a standard visitor visa requires. Applicants must meet an invitation and financial support requirement from their sponsoring child or grandchild, along with medical insurance requirements. It is a temporary status and distinct from the Parents and Grandparents permanent residence sponsorship program.

Choosing the Right Pathway

Every temporary residence pathway carries its own eligibility criteria, supporting documentation, and conditions attached to status. Some visits require only a visitor visa or eTA, while work and study intentions require the corresponding permit, obtained before entry in most cases.

Eligibility is assessed on an individual basis. The general information on this page should not be treated as a determination of your eligibility for any specific pathway.
