Canada Study Permit

A study permit allows international students to enrol at Canadian Designated Learning Institutions for programs longer than 6 months. Officers assess two things: genuine educational intent and likelihood of departure after graduation.

Refusals are concentrated among applicants with insufficient home-country ties and inconsistent financial evidence — both are preventable with proper preparation.

A study permit is required for most international students enrolled in programs longer than 6 months at Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). The eligibility assessment focuses on two things: the applicant's genuine student intent, and the likelihood they will leave Canada after studies end.

Core Requirements

  • • Acceptance letter from a DLI — the institution must be on IRCC's designated learning institution list
  • • Sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses for the full duration (IRCC requires proof of funds)
  • • Clean criminal record — criminal inadmissibility can block a study permit even for misdemeanors in some jurisdictions
  • • Medical exam if required (certain countries require IME upfront; others are asked later)
  • • No security or health inadmissibility

Proof of Funds

As of 2024, IRCC updated the proof of funds requirements significantly:

  • • First year: full tuition + $20,635 living expenses (for a single student)
  • • Subsequent years: $10,000 per year per additional dependent
  • • Funds must be accessible — GICs, bank statements, scholarships, or parental support letters with proof of funds
  • • The increase from $10,000 (the prior threshold) to $20,635 was implemented January 2024

Who Doesn't Need a Study Permit

  • • Programs under 6 months (though a study permit can be obtained voluntarily for PGWP planning purposes)
  • • Family members of diplomats accredited to Canada
  • • Refugee claimants with protected person status in Canada

Study Permit Application Review

Previous refusals, insufficient ties documentation, and financial evidence gaps are the most common preventable reasons for refusal. RCIC #R515343 can review your application before submission.
