2026 EOI Model — New System
The NTNP transitioned to an Expression of Interest (EOI) model in 2026. Applications are no longer accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates submit an EOI, are scored and ranked, and are invited to apply based on their rank position. Apply early — the 197-nomination cap can be reached before mid-year.
NTNP Streams
- Must currently be working in the Northwest Territories with valid work authorization
- Full-time job offer from an NWT employer required
- TEER 0–4 occupations in sectors of NWT labour priority (mining, construction, healthcare, government, tourism)
- Minimum 6 months of continuous employment in the NWT with the supporting employer
- Language: CLB 4 minimum
- Must demonstrate genuine intent to remain in the NWT
- New EOI-based system launched in 2026 — applications ranked by points before invitation to apply
Processing: NTNP transitioned to an EOI model in 2026. Invitations are issued from the ranked EOI pool. With only 197 annual nominations, the pool is small but competition is also lower than southern provinces.
Strategic note: The NWT's small allocation (197 nominations) means the pool is less competitive than Ontario or BC, but also means the program is exhausted quickly each year. Apply early in the calendar year — the annual allocation can be fully issued before mid-year.
Where Most NTNP Applications Fail
EOI: NWT connection not demonstrated — applicants without active NWT employment are rarely invited
Less than 6 months continuous employment with the NWT employer at time of EOI submission
Annual allocation exhausted — NTNP's 197 nominations can be fully issued before mid-year
Employer not registered with NTNP or has prior compliance issues
Business stream: exploratory visit not completed before application submission
Settlement plan not credible for NWT — officers scrutinize intent to remain given NWT's isolation
Related pathways: Workers needing initial status to work in the NWT should review employer-specific work permits. Candidates with an active federal Express Entry profile may receive a nomination that adds 600 CRS points through the NTNP Express Entry stream.
